Protected enough to open the heart: Holly and Pine 🏵️

Bright flower greetings Reader,

When a Holly tree grows within reach of browsing animals, something remarkable can happen.

If its leaves are eaten, the next leaves that come in grow with more prickles.

But higher up the same tree, safely beyond an animal’s reach, the leaves are smoother, with the prickles disappearing almost entirely.

The plant seems to produce the protection it needs, and no more.

🌿 Holly is one of the first essences we’ll explore in Bach Flowers in Contemporary Practice Part Four, alongside Pine.

These are two remedies Ruth and Kathleen consider a fundamental pair: essences we may encounter early in this work, and then find ourselves returning to again with greater nuance.

Holly brings us into the territory of love, and what happens when we feel outside of it. Envy, jealousy, anger, suspicion: the prickles that can appear when love seems to belong to everyone but us.

And then there’s Pine.

🌲 Pine trees respond to injury in an entirely different way. When wounded, they quickly produce resin to seal and protect the damaged area. That same dense, sticky substance helps make Pine wood remarkably durable.

Pine, as an essence, brings us into questions of guilt, shame, and deservingness.

So what might these two very different plant responses have to show us about the ways we protect ourselves?

And what becomes possible when protection no longer has to mean closing the heart?

That’s some of what we’ll explore when we begin with Holly and Pine on September 24: An immersion into the plants themselves, decades of clinical experience, real cases, and the aha moments that emerge in live discussion.

Early Bird pricing for Part Four—and the complete four-part bundle—are available through September 11.
